Description
The Dom Tower and the Railway Museum
In the old Dutch center of Utrecht is the highest church tower in the Netherlands and the great pride of Utrecht: the ‘Domtoren’ or Dom Tower. Not far from here is an old Railway station which now is a museum. Here you will find everything about Dutch train travel and special events you can visit.
The Pride of Utrecht
The construction of the Cathedral began in the year 1321 and took around 61 years! To get to the top, you will have to climb 465 steps. The reward at the top is great. From the 112-meter high tower you have a breathtaking Dutch view over the city and the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can even see the capital Amsterdam! Behind the church, you can see one of the most beautiful inside gardens of the Netherlands: an oasis of peace in the busy city. This medieval garden is full of herbs, flowers, and ornamental plants and surrounded by characteristic windows and sculptures which give the garden a romantic look.
Under the Dom
In 1674, the church was hit by a devastating tornado. The church itself and the church tower were separated from each other. The space in between is now the famous cathedral square. In the cathedral square, weekly events take place there, but also concerts, light shows and festivals. Under the square we go on an underground journey through 2000 years of history and archeology of the Cathedral square. DOMunder is a unique attraction that you absolutely should not miss.
Track History
Within a small walking distance of the Dom is a refurbished train station from 1874. Under old chandeliers, 175 years of train history has been collected. The Dutch railway museum has a large collection of trains and numerous exhibitions. You can admire the very first steam locomotive, but also enjoy live performances on the Orient Express. And in the model warehouse you can learn everything about train models. The railway museum is an educational adventure for young and old.
